Super 8 is very expensive relative to video. A 50' cart runs about 2.5 minutes at 24fps (sound speed) and about 3.5 mins at 18 fps. If you shoot color reversal S-8 film (can be shown on a projector), film and processing is roughly $20-$22 per 50' cart. If you shoot negative stock, you must transfer it to video to view the footage. With minimum lab order reqs, cost can then go to $45-$55 per cart...Some people do the transfers themselves after buying their own equipment, which is discussed on this list in the archives.

Alright, I just picked up a super 8mm video camera from a local thrift shop for 5 bucks. It works and all the components are there. I had a local camera shop check it out.

I would like to know how long can I shoot onto a 50foot cartridge of super 8mm flim?

and is it even an economically reasonable idea for me to pursue Super 8mm filming, over small digital camcorders, as a teenager with no money, but big ideas...?

Any feedback/help would be really great!
    thanks,

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">My first advice is to NEVER say "super 8mm video camera". Super 8 cameras shoot film not video.

As for using it, its all about the look. Super 8 looks has a nice gritty film look where as video is clean, flat and just gay looking. So try shooting a cartridge of film and see how it goes.
